COINED programs offered in Mexico CityMexico City Facts3rd largest and most populated city in the world It's the city with the biggest amount of museums Home to UNAM University, the most recognized Latin American University It has the biggest zoo in Latin America |

Mexico City is the country's largest city as well as its most important political, cultural, educational and financial center. Located in a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico this city is a Latin American mecca...of pretty much everything!
The city is filled with historic landmarks, a true testimony to their Aztec and colonial origins. Also, it is home to the main campus of the UNAM. National Autonomous University of Mexico is the most prestigious educational institution in Latin America.
So far, landmarks, university....but don't let this scholar facade fool you! Mexico city is also an artistic center of the country and of Spanish-Speaking America. From local and international cuisine all the way to amusement parks this city has it all.
This city of contrasts offers top notch television, music and films and around 160 museums, over 100 art galleries, and some 30 concert halls, all of which maintain a constant cultural activity during the whole year where you can enjoy Pablo Rivera's and Frida Kahlo's artwork. Who could ask for more?!

The best of the city
|
Museo Nacional de Antropología: Over 20 different exhibits offer guests a glimpse into the country's past with things like a diorama of the city when the Spanish arrived and an Aztec calendar stone. Tools, clothing, crafts and mannequins depicting life during Mexico's early days form some of the other exhibits. |
Templo Mayor: Amazing archaeological discovery built in 1375. An on-site museum exhibits a number of artifacts discovered at the site and educates visitors on Aztec civilization. Don't leave without checking out the temple's sacrificial stone and the gigantic stone carving of Coyilxauhqui, an ancient Aztec goddess. |
|
Alameda Central: The city's oldest park dotted with trees and visited by pedestrians from all over the world. History reveals that the grounds were once an Aztec marketplace and also an execution site during the Spanish Inquisition. The eastern side of this natural oasis houses the Palacio de Bellas Artes. While at the park, be sure to visit the mural painted by Diego Rivera. |
Zócalo: The main square in the Centro Histórico district. It's full of historic sights and ancient architecture. The area is always alive with people and it's the center for parades, ceremonies and celebrations on holidays and other special events. |
|
Plaza de las Tres Culturas: Three different cultures located in one spot: Aztec, Spanish and contemporary Mexican architecture meet here. You'll enjoy taking in the remains of the ancient Aztec city of Tlatelolco and the colonial Church of Santiago. Be sure to note the juxtaposition of ancient culture with the modern Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores building. |
Museo Frida Kahlo: Famous artist and wife of muralist Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo's blue house is today a museum celebrating her life and work. The rooms are kept just as they were when she lived here, and a variety of artifacts and works of art fill them. Personal books, photos, the couple's collection of pre-Columbian art and more are available for view. |
Transport
Mexico city is a fairly easy-to-get-around city, considering its gigantic size! An extensive and really cheap subway system covers most of the metropolis with frequent service almost round the clock. Above ground, peseros (small buses, also called microbuses or micros), regular buses and electric-powered trolley buses will help you get anywhere. The metrobus is a recent addition. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. Getting in and out of town is also fairly straightforward, with frequent, inexpensive bus services linking the capital with practically every point in the republic.
Climate
If you are accustomed to the heat of Mexico’s beaches you may be pleasantly surprised by the temperate climate of Mexico City. At this altitude it rarely gets too hot, and even in the summer months you may need a sweater. The warmest months are April and May, before the rains start with temperatures around 32 °C (90 °F). From late May or early June through September warm, sunny days often change rapidly to cool, wet evenings. The chilliest time is between November and February when temperatures may reach -2 to -5 °C (28 to 23 °F).

If you have an adventurous spirit, eat on, and you will be rewarded with a gastronomic experience you will not likely forget. Mexican cuisine is centered around three national staples: tortillas, beans and chile peppers but they vary from region to region depending on the influence of the native American traditions and the Spanish heritage. Tacos, chiles rellenos, Huachinango, sopes and much more are some of the dishes you can't miss! |
There are many forms of Mexican music but there are two that stand out as the most prevalent in traditional folklore music. The Ranchera: sung on Mexican ranchs for hundreds of years and its main themes are a love of nature, religion, love and patriotism. And the Mariachi: not a style of music but a group of musicians with usually three players or more. |

Cinema |

Known for its folk art traditions, mostly derived from the indigenous and Spanish crafts such as ceramics, pottery, embroidered cotton garments, baskets, rugs and silver work. After the Mexican Revolution, a new generation of Mexican artists led a vibrant national movement that created works that reflected an optimistic view of the national character such as Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. |
Some of the most famous Mexican movies are "Amores perros", "Y tu mamá también", "El crimen del Padre Amaro" and "Biutiful". Some actors you may know, that are very famous in Hollywood are Gael García Bernal and Salma Hayek. Some modern dicrectors we can recommend are Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñarritu. |
Science and technology |
Sports |
|
Science development was slow at first but during the twentieth century, Mexico made significant progress. New universities and research institutes were established. Today, The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM), officially established in 1910, is one of the most important institutes of higher learning in Mexico. UNAM provides world class education in science, medicine, and engineering. |
There is almost no discipline on which Mexican sportsmen and women are not proficient. Among the most popular Mexican sports we can find softball and, of course, soccer, which is the favorite of the vast majority of the population. Unlike other Mexican sports, soccer can literally paralyze the country, especially when two all-time rivals meet each other. Motocross, diving and the famous “lucha” (wrestling) are also part of the great offer of Mexican sports available. |
Spare time |
Literature |
|
Mexicans enjoy their free time very much and as many Latin American countries they are very fond of the family time and very attentive to their religious life. Families spend a lot of time together either going on a pic nic in the park all together or assisting to church. They enjoy outdoor activities and also going to the movies. As far as sports, mexicans love soccer and restling. |
Mexican literature is one of the most prolific and influential of the Spanish language. It has internationally recognized authors such as Juan Rulfo, Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Amado Nervo and several others. Reading Amado Nervo's poetry or Laura Esquivel's novels are a nice way of practicing your Spanish before coming. |

You can take your Spanish lessons in different places in various countries in Latin America. It is possible to combine destinations in any of our schools in Latin America or Spain without extra charge. You will find the same teaching method in all our Spanish schools.
4. Will I get a certificate after finishing the program?
Yes, you will get a certificate that specifies the level of Spanish achieved and the amount of hours you have taken. You will get also a progress report which includes the skills developed during your course and a recommendation letter from your teacher.
5. Will I receive university credits?
You can receive university credits for attending to our schools but you should first visit your school’s language department in order to know the specific requirements.
