Dominican Republic occupies the bulk of "La Española" in the archipelago of the Greater Antilles. In the western part of the island you'll find Haiti. To the south the Caribbean Sea washes the shores of Dominican Republic and to the north the Atlantic Ocean. The Mona Passage to the east is the only thing that separates the country from Puerto Rico.

The Dominican economy is the second largest in the Caribbean and although it is famous for being a sugar exporter, today the most important industry is tourism. Juan Manuel Taveras Rodriguez was a Dominican professor emeritus of Harvard Medical School and Radiologist-in-Chief Emeritus of the Massachusetts General Hospital. It is regarded as the father of Neuroradiology, having written the first textbook on the subject, and founded both the American Society of Neuroradiology. Other scientists that stand out are Miguel Canela and Erich E. Kunhardt. |
